That's not all! part one

That's not all Singapore has to offer!

Come 2010, Singapore will see the official opening of two of the most highly-anticipated integrated resorts of the year, Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands.

Resorts World Sentosa is in development stages on the island of Sentosa, off the southern coats of Singapore. Developed by Genting International, this S$6.59 billion (US$4.93 billion) destination will be home to Southeast Asia's FIRST AND ONLY Universal Studios theme park, as well as the world's LARGEST oceanarium. Resorts World Sentosa also hold six luxury hotels (1,800 rooms in total), all furnished according to a different theme, as well as full conference and meeting facilities.

The integrated resort which will occupy over 49 hectres of land is divided into three zones, central, east and west.

(Right) The Crockfords Tower (Left) Hotel Michael

In the central zone lies the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) facilities, an unparalleled array of world-class retail and dining options at FestiveWalk, street performances and art displays at Bull Ring and Crane Dance, Le Vie, the resident theatre extravaganza of Resorts World Sentosa, and four of six hotels, including the super luxurious all-suites hotel Crockford Towers (which will be home to the resort's casino), and the one and only Hotel Michael, designed by US architectural legend Michael Graves.

The west zone holds the remaining two hotels, Equarius Hotel, and Spa Villas, as well as the Equarius Water Park, Marine Life Park, and The Spa by ESPA.

Equarius Hotel

The Equarius Hotel is situated at the border of Sentosa's lush, verdant forests, located near the Equarius Water Park, a water themed park with rides, slides and pools, cradled underneath the canopy of a tropical rainforest.

The coastal Spa Villas, made up of over thirty villas floating on a lagoon, is the ideal getaway destination for those looking for abit of peace and tranquility, for those who need a well-earned rest, for weddings, for honeymoons. Completed by world class spa operator ESPA's award winning wellness center, the Spa Villa is an exclusive sanctuary where guests can pamper and recharge. The Spa's unique offerings include lifestyle coaching, nutrition management, stress management, general health and fitness, post-operative rehabilitation, complementary therapies, thalassotherapy and interactive dolphin therapy programmes.

Spanning 8 hectares, the Marine Life Park will be the world's largest oceanarium, holding over 700,000 fishes and 20 million gallons of water. The programme allows guests a chance to admire dolphins up close, and even dive with and feed fearsome tiger sharks. A shallow wading pool gives both children and grown-ups a closer interaction with various reef fish and corals. A quality entertaining and educational experience for kids and adults alike.

The Maritime Xperiential Museum will take visitors back in time to one of the greatest adventures in history. The museum will house a 360-degree multimedia theatre where visitors can trace the history of the maritime Silk Route from the 9th to the 19th century, through an interactive, multi-sensory process.
In the east zone sits the Universal Studios theme park, South-east Asia's first and only Universal Studios theme park. It will occupy 20 hectares of space, and consists of 24 attractions and rides, 18 of which will be originally or specially adapted for Singapore. The theme park is divided into seven areas - Hollywood, New York, Sci-Fi City, Ancient Egypt, The Lost World, Far Far Away, and Madagascar. At Universal Studios Singapore®, you will be inspired and delighted by unique entertainment experiences that bring the silver screen to life.

That's not all! part two

Marina Bay Sands will house the first casino in Singapore, in development stages by one of the biggest gaming companies, Las Vegas Sands, at Marina South in Central Singapore.

The total cost of the development is placed at S$8.0 billion.

Marina Bay Sands will feature three 55 storey hotel towers. The three towers will be linked by a 1 hectare sky terrace. In front of the three towers will be a Theatre Block, a Convention and Exhibition Facilities Block, as well as the Casino Block, which will have up to 1 000 gaming tables and 1 400 slot machines. Its roof will be retractable, providing a waterfall through the roof of collected rainwater when closed in the day and treating audiences to laser shows when opened at night. The Art-Science Museum will be ready by early-2010.

The Marina Bay Sands will be a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) destination unlike any other, a winning combination of flexible convention and exhibition amenities, providing luxury hotels, world-class entertainment and dining, convenience and networking opportunities for international delegates.

Situated in central Singapore makes for easy access into the city's Central Business District, as well as numerous other hotels. The exhibition and convention facilities will house

•a modern exhibition hall which can host approximately 2,000 exhibition booths;

•a flexible Convention Centre comprising 250 meeting rooms with capacity for over 45,000 delegates; and

•a majestic grand ballroom of more than 8,000 square meters with a seating capacity for 6,600 persons for a banquet, 7,000 persons for a stage performance, or 11,000 persons for an auditorium-style lecture.

The Museum’s lotus-inspired design lends an iconic presence to Singapore’s waterfront and is a symbolic gesture of welcome to guests from all over the world. Visitors will be inspired by the blockbuster exhibitions from around the world.

The museum’s unique roof is specially designed to channel rainwater through the centre atrium of the building as a waterfall. At night, the same roof transforms into an amphitheatre, enthralling audiences with great light and laser shows and fireworks with the city in the background.

With all these exciting surprises waiting for you next year, how can you possibly pass up the chance to visit Singapore? Visit Singapore now!

Interesting Facts
Do you know that Orchard road was a nutmeg plantation in the olden days?

Orchard Road supposedly got its name from the orchards and plantations that existed in the area until the turn of the 20th century. In the 1900s, a mysterious disease swept through the nutmeg plantations, wiping them out within a year. Because of its location in a valley, floods were also common. They were only controlled in 1965 when Stamford Canal - part of which runs below the pedestrian mall fronting Wisma Atria Shopping Centre today - was deepened and widened.

The Original Hock Lam Street Beef Kway Teow

One simply cannot discuss beef kway teow (a wide Chinese noodle) in Singapore without including this famous beef kway teow restaurant, one of Singapore's heritage hawkers, and definitely one of the best beef kway teow around.

They've been around since 1911, (98 years! that's close to a century!), yet nothing has stopped them from continuing to whip up delicious beef noodles everyday. The business has spanned across four generations and is now run by the founder's great grandchild, Tina, who had given up her well-paying bank job to continue the tradition and to ensure that the authentic Hock Lam Beef Kway Teow continues on (I really have to thank her for that!).

Of course many copycats have sprung up, hoping to ride on the success they have enjoyed over the past 98 years. However, locating the authentic, original isn't so hard. The original is currently located at:

22 China Street
#01-01 Far East Square

they also have a branch at:

949 Upper Serangoon Road

as well as a new location in the works.
The dish comes in two versions, soup or dry, and three sizes ($5, $6 and $7), with a choice of yellow noodles, thick beehoon, or kway teow. The sliced beef is tender and delicious, however what Hock Lam is most famous for is their "cham cham" mixed beef noodles, which include the sliced beef, beef balls, brisket, tripe, and tendons (add one dollar if you want them), all stewed to perfection. There is no beefy odour (which can be quite a turn-off), and the texture is just right. One thing I was particularly impressed about were the tendons (connective tissue that connects muscle to bone). These things are very rich in collagen, perfect for pregnant women and growing children. Also, they are simply delicious. Chewy, with just the right degree of glutinosity. And if you don't like offal, you can always order without.

The gravy is thick, smooth, rich, yet does not overpower the flavour of the other ingredients, giving you an explosive mouthful of flavours everytime. The soup (which you get on the side if you order dry) is fantastic. Rich, robust, and intense with the flavour of herbs and beef, testimony to the long hours put into creating the broth. Unlike other stores that serve soups full of salt and MSG, Hock Lam here serves its customers the real stuff.

If you come down to Singapore and you love beef, this is one restaurant you have to visit. I know i'll be heading there pretty soon for another highly satisfying lunch!
